Miriam Colburn passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, at Oak Hill Assisted Living in Grand Rapids.
At age 106, she was definitely an "old soul," but she was young at heart right up until the end. She renewed her driver's license at age101, lived at home until 105, and drank champagne on her 106th birthday! She was well known for her kind spirit, her sense of humor and her Finnish determination.
Miriam was born on Sept. 18, 1913, to Jacob and Sophia Jurvelin on a farmstead in rural Floodwood, the youngest daughter of 12 siblings. She graduated from high school in Deer River in 1932 and went to work there in the medical offices of Drs. Peterson and Miners.
Miriam married Floyd Colburn in 1941. Their first home was a log cabin in Bena, MN., where Floyd worked with the CCCs and the U.S. Forest Service. They later made their home in Grand Rapids for over 65 years, where Floyd was the Itasca County Extension Forester and they raised their two daughters.
Miriam was the ultimate wife, mom and grandma, taking care of her family first but sharing her gifts with others as she volunteered as a Red Cross Gray Lady at the hospital, a deacon at Community Presbyterian Church and a care assistant at Grand Village until she was almost 90. She was renowned for her cooking and baking – particularly her cherry pie and potato salad – and no trip to the hunting shack was complete without her homemade doughnuts and Hunters Stew!
She loved going dancing, spending time outdoors with her family and eating out. But above all, Miriam was one of those people everyone remembered after they met her. She was gracious and thoughtful and a whole lot of fun to be with.
She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd and all of her siblings. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Dennis) Patterson of Marcell and Wendy (Ken) Johnson of Duluth; grandson Jason (Sondra) Rockvam of Coeur d'Alene, ID. and Lake Creek, AK.; granddaughter Allison (William) Carli of Douglas, MA.; numerous "bonus" grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and her cat Cricket, who she received as a 90th birthday present.
Special thanks go out to all the Guardian Angels who helped Miriam in so many ways and allowed their own lives to become so lovingly vested in hers. She was that kind of person.
A private family gathering is planned for next spring to scatter Miriam's ashes alongside Floyd's, in the forestland they held so dear. Memorials may be sent to a charity of the giver's choice.

Thomas C. Swentkofske, age 84 of Cohasset, MN died peacefully in his home on June 2, 2020.
Tom was born in 1935 and claims to have been in the first vehicle to travel to Remer on the newly blacktopped Hwy 6, following his birth in Grand Rapids to Claude & Georgia Swentkofske. He spent his early years in the woods and waters surrounding Remer until his family moved to Grand Rapids where he attended school and met Barbara Kaatiala, who became his wife of 54 years.
Tom enlisted in the United States Marine Corps following the Korean War and served around the world in places such as Korea, Japan, Panama, and Puerto Rico. Tom was very proud to have been a marine and believed in the motto Semper Fi both as a marine and personally.
Following his discharge, Tom graduated from the MN School of Business with a degree in Sales & Advertising, after which, he returned to Grand Rapids, married Barb, and worked for 35 years in various capacities for the Blandin Paper Company. Tom and Barb immersed themselves in raising their family, supporting their kids with a deft touch in all their various endeavors. Tom & Barb shared many adventures and travelled extensively in retirement; and spent their winters for several years in San Diego.
Tom was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Add Temple Shrine, a past Elder and Trustee of the Community Presbyterian Church, one of the founders and past president of the Itasca Community College Foundation, and past president of the GRAHA.
Tom was an avid outdoorsman throughout his life and enjoyed (particularly with family and close friends) camping and canoeing, angling and spearing fish, hunting ducks and upland birds, deer, caribou, elk, trapping, picking wild rice, boiling sap, planting trees, and raising ducklings to release into the wild. It is fair to say that Tom’s smoked lake trout is second to none, and wisely, he got the Harbor Restaurant’s onion ring recipe before they closed. If you didn’t know how to play cribbage or gin rummy, he would be happy to teach you – for a fee of course.
Tom’s love of everything outdoors and his penchant for wheeling and dealing led to a long career in antique duck and fish decoy collecting. He collected long enough that several items passed through his collection 2 or 3 times over the years. A hallmark of any trade with Tom is that both sides usually came away thinking they got the best of the deal.
Tom was a people person and he enjoyed chatting and getting to know people wherever he went, always giving new acquaintances the benefit of the doubt regarding their character. He especially enjoyed meeting and getting to know the friends, families, and pets of his children, and considered all of them as his extended family. If we vouched for someone, that was more than good enough for him.
Preceded in death by his wife Barbara, and twin sisters Jackie and Kitty, and younger sister Sandy. Tom is survived by his brother Dan (Marlene) Swentkofske; his daughters Janet (Peter) Sparen and Julie (John) Wilharm, his son Steve (June) Swentkofske; grandchildren Katie (Will) Bernhjelm, Sara Wilharm, Lindsey Wilharm (Lucas Graves), Sam Sparen, Jane (Tony) McCartney, Henry (Emily) Swentkofske, Gordon Swentkofske; and great grandchildren Elizabeth, Graham, Leo, Zyla, Wes, Hadley, & Bristol; numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
A family celebration of life will be held for Tom later this summer. Memorials preferred to the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation or the Second Harvest North Central Food Bank.

The Book of Life has closed for Margaret Z. Morris, age 79, who died December 27, 2019 at Grand Itasca Hospital, surrounded by her family.
Her first chapter began on May 18, 1940 in Indianapolis, IN when Margaret was born to Susannah Elizabeth (Hume) Zimmer and Kenneth Marvin Zimmer. She grew up in New Augusta, IN, attending Pike Township Schools for elementary and secondary education. A multi-talented woman, Margaret took piano lessons at an early age and was the accompanist of choral groups in high school. Her church saw her talent and paid for lessons so she could become the organist of Salem Lutheran Church. Her summers were spent between Camp Lutherwald, where she was thrust into preparing meals for hundreds of hungry campers at the age of 13, and vacations at her grandparents’ resort on Lake Wabana, north of Grand Rapids, MN. She served on the Fashion Board for LS Ayers, the major department store in Indianapolis. After high school, Margaret attended Wittenberg University (Springfield, OH), singing and accompanying the choir on piano, culminating in a concert tour through Germany. Margaret earned a B.S in Christian Education.
After college, her second chapter began when she was hired as the director of Christian Education at Fairview Presbyterian Church (Indianapolis, IN). Margaret attended the church’s summer Synod School (Wooster, OH) and met David E. Morris, whom she married in 1962. They started in Crothersville, IN and began a trek north to Cincinnati, OH, where David served as pastor and Margaret sang in the choir, played the organ, began painting in oils and acrylics, and had three children: Rebekah E. Morris, Sarah E. Morris and John D. Morris. Summers were now split between Synod School and Lake Wabana. Continuing their journey north, David’s job now moved them to Mosinee, WI. While in Mosinee, at age 35, Margaret decided to go to seminary and chose United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities (UTS). Commuting from Mosinee to Minneapolis for two years, the family then moved to Duluth, MN. Finishing with a Master of Divinity, Margaret was ordained on her birthday in 1979. She continued working part time at the University of Minnesota (UMD) in Campus Ministry, and Religion and Health for UMD’s Medical School, as well as serving as Interim Pastor at Hammond Avenue Presbyterian Church in Superior, WI. Now closer to Grand Rapids, they purchased a cabin and spent summers on Wabana.
Chapter three was filled with advanced professional travel and activity. Margaret was the first female President of the Program Agency of the United Presbyterian Church (USA) and served on the first General Assembly Council, which brought the merger of the northern and southern bodies of the Presbyterian Church, into the new Presbyterian Church (USA). She was the first Chair of the Peacekeeping Committee of the new church and wrote a book about peacekeeping. During her service to the church, she led visits to the Presbyterian Churches in Korea, Japan and Brazil. With all this travel, her art was expressed through cross stitch, having the ability to stitch on planes, and occasionally during retreats and meetings. Margaret began teaching at Ghost Ranch (Abiqui, NM), the Alban Institute (Durham, NC) and Montreat (Montreat, NC) providing education on small churches, interim ministry, conflict and women’s issues. After the death of her husband David, in 1984, she joined the staff of the Synod of Lakes and Prairies as Associate Executive.
1985 brought chapter four of Margaret’s life. Margaret found renewed life with Arthur Merrill, Professor of Old Testament, whom she met while attending UTS. Arthur also had three adult children: Margaret J. Merrill (Paul Lundquist), Robert L. Merrill and Katherine M. (Donald) Nelson. The families would find opportunities to come together on Lake Wabana. Professionally, Margaret brought her expertise in interim ministry and conflict resolution in the church by serving in numerous Presbytery and Synod Executive roles. She served as Interim Executive Presbyter for Homestead Presbytery in Lincoln, NE. She held several Executive positions for the Synod of Lakes and Prairies from 1987 until the end of 1991. During the next four years, she was the Interim Executive Presbyter for John Knox Presbytery (Richland Center, WI) and Blackhawk Presbytery (Oregon, IL). In 1994, after the death of her oldest daughter, Rebekah, Margaret decided to take a permanent position, becoming the Executive Presbyter of Wabash Valley Presbytery in northern Indiana. While in Wabash Valley, she asked her council for a study leave to learn watercolor painting, which took her back to Ghost Ranch.
Even with all her professional travel, Margaret and Arthur found time to travel for pleasure. They visited Panama, where Margaret’s daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Matt were stationed. They traveled to Sweden and Norway, where Art’s son, Robert was stationed. They went around the world, stopping in Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Egypt, Jordan, and Israel. They visited Italy and Greece, spent winters in Arizona and summers at Lake Wabana, as well as regular trips to Ghost Ranch.
Retirement came in 2000, with chapter five. Margaret and Arthur built their retirement home on Lake Wabana. Margaret accelerated her painting and education, by teaching and attending workshops. She taught classes and served on the Board at MacRostie Art Center and continued traveling to Ghost Ranch. She loved retirement, spending her life with Arthur on Wabana, painting, playing bridge, entertaining, being active in PEO, and spending time with friends and family.
Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, Susannah and Kenneth Zimmer, her first husband, David E. Morris, and daughter, Rebekah E. Morris. She is survived by her second husband, Arthur L. Merrill; brother, Kenneth M. (Barbara) Zimmer, Jr. of Grand Rapids, MN; sister, Susannah E. (Cress) Hart of Aurora, CO. Her daughter, Sarah E. (Matt) Copeland of Grand Rapids, MN; son, John D. (Debra) Morris of Kansas City; stepchildren, Margaret J. Merrill (Paul Lundquist) of Minneapolis, Robert L. Merrill, Katherine M. (Don) Nelson of Cedar, MN. Margaret has six grandchildren, Richard L. Copeland, David P. Copeland, Rebekah A. Morris, Hannah J. Morris, Charles A.M. Lundquist and Katherine J. Lundquist; and two great-grandchildren, Augustus W. Copeland and Frances E. Copeland.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 10, 2020, at 11 AM at Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids, MN. It is requested that all clergy wear his/her robes and stoles.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to: The Fund for Women at the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, Community Presbyterian Church, and/or Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center.

Carole Vera Erickson
1930-2018
Carole Vera Erickson passed away in Grand Rapids, MN, on September 28, 2018. Born in Montevideo, Minnesota in 1930 to Vera and Fred Boos, Carole grew up in Minneapolis and attended Bancroft Elementary, Bryant Junior High and Minneapolis Central High School. She majored in theater at the University of Minnesota until her marriage to Vernon Erickson in 1950. They settled in Grand Rapids where they raised their family and threw themselves into community service for the rest of their lives.
Area organizations learned that Carole's hard work and leadership were invaluable. Over the years she served as a Deacon, Trustee and Elder in the Community Presbyterian Church, a 55-year member of the Grand Rapids AAUW, President of the Camp Fire Girls, Chair of the Grand Rapids Library Foundation, and President of the Grand Rapids Players. She was especially proud of her involvement in the creation of the Judy Garland Festival and Museum. Carole was a born actress and loved the arts. She starred in innumerable productions of the Grand Rapids Players, brought sassy comedy to the stage of Showboat and kept a collection of black hats on hand to become the Wicked Witch of the West whenever needed. A talented seamstress and craftsperson, she sewed hundreds of beautiful costumes, knitted complicated sweaters and afghans and created some blue-ribbon quilts. Her hobbies led to her eventual co-ownership of the crafts store “Peddler’s Two” in the Central School Building.
With her husband Vern, she traveled widely—ski trips out west, to Innsbruck for a winter Olympics, to Sweden to visit relatives and to Austria for a memorable hiking trip with girlfriends. Later in life, she traveled regularly across the country to read to her grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son Stephen Paul, she is survived by her brother, Fred Boos and his wife Anne Marie, her children, Marcia Noebels and husband Jeffrey, Pamela Corson and husband Randall, Glen Erickson and wife Martha, and her grandchildren, Kate Noebels Lovo, and husband Aloisio, Abigail Noebels, Nicholas Corson, and Clay and Casey Cole, and great-grandsons, Ben and Jack Lovo.

Marjorie Jean Elvig
1933-2018
Mrs. Marjorie "Margie" Jean (Binns) Elvig, age 84 of Minneapolis, formerly of Grand Rapids, MN went to be with Jesus on June 7, 2018, after a 12 year struggle with Alzheimer’s.
Margie was born in Newark, N. J. on October 1, 1933, to John William Binns and Martha Helen (Boothby) Binns. Sister, Marilyn, joined them and they grew up with music lessons, much reading, and faithful church attendance at Evangel Baptist Church. The Lord Jesus called Margie at an early age, and He became her Lord and Savior. She attended Wheaton College in Illinois where she earned a degree in Elementary Education and also served in a program that reached out to the children in the “projects” of Chicago. While attending Wheaton, she met her sweetheart, Earl James Elvig. They were united in marriage on August 17, 1956, and enjoyed 52 years together. Margie became a school teacher while her husband was attending seminary in Philadelphia, PA. She raised five children while faithfully serving alongside her husband at each church he pastored throughout the Midwest. She was an indispensable partner in ministry playing the piano and organ, leading choirs, teaching Bible studies and Sunday school, and lending compassionate care to anyone in need. She taught piano lessons, did substitute teaching, provided foster care to 5 children, volunteered with hospice, and sang with the community chorus. Margie was an extremely talented pianist and accompanist and used her musical gift to serve and glorify God. She and her sister delighted in creating music together and presented many worshipful concerts.
Margie was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved people, especially children, and enjoyed sharing music with them. Each grandchild can remember her sitting at the piano with them and singing. She had a very welcoming presence, would have a great meal and treats prepared for visits and would wave good-bye until we had left her sight. She was an accomplished gardener, flowers graced her table, an avid reader, and life-long learner. The Bible and the inerrancy of Scripture were very important to her, and she worked diligently teaching her children and many others God’s Word. She desired that people know the love of her Father in Heaven and that we are saved by faith alone. One of the verses she shared with her daughters in a gift of a Bible was “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.” III John 1:4 She was a woman of prayer with volumes of diaries filled with prayers that certainly helped many. She will be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit, her passion for God and people, and her love of music.
Preceded in death by two infant sons, Stephen and Paul; her parents; two infant grandsons, Patrick Riley and Jacob Von Duyke; husband, Rev. E. James Elvig; sister, Marilyn Wiedenman. Survived by five daughters, Nancy (Tom) Ringgenberg, Betsy (Andy) Von Duyke, Susan (Bill) Neumeister, Laurie Elvig (Joe Riley) and Patricia (Michael) Reed; 17 grandchildren, Eric (Nicole) Ringgenberg, Lauren (Andrew) Clements, Katie (Tim) Hedberg, Mark Ringgenberg, Anna Von Duyke, Ellie Von Duyke, Brannen Neumeister, Luke Neumeister, Aaron Neumeister, Duncan Riley, Owen Riley, Henry Riley, Natalie Reed, Julia Reed, Jon Harris Reed, Max Reed, Samuel Reed; 2 great- grandchildren, Colton Ringgenberg and Eli Ringgenberg; 3 sister-in- laws, Virginia Bender, Martha Look and June Elvig; one brother-in-law, Charles Elvig; as well as other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Margie's life will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 14, at GracePoint Church, 2351 Rice Creek Road, New Brighton, MN 55112, with visitation one hour prior to service. Inurnment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

Elizabeth Ann "Libby" Muir
1929-2017
“Libby” Muir (Elizabeth Ann Townsend Muir) passed away peacefully in Grand Rapids, MN on December 7, 2017, 15 days after her 88th birthday. She had recently broken her femur, and while her leg healed well, her spirit did not. She was surrounded during her last days by various of her four children and their spouses, her seven grandchildren, her four great grandchildren, and, of course, her faithful cat companion, Ralph.
Libby was born in Lansdowne, PA, to Ralph and Ruby Townsend, whose names she bestowed on two of her beloved cats. She had one brother, Richard Townsend, who preceded her in death. She attended and graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. At Allegheny, she was Concertmistress of the Allegheny Sinfonietta, majored in Biology, and met her future husband, William H. Muir (“Bill”). She recalled being attracted to this “odd” fellow who studied all hours of the day and night in the Biology building, where he also listened to classical music and had a cat. After graduation, she worked for a year at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Libby and Bill married in June of 1952, and moved to Madison, WI, where he was a PhD student in the Department of Plant Pathology at UW. She worked as a Research Assistant in the same department. Two of their daughters, Patricia Muir (husband Bruce McCune) and Cynthia Muir Kuhns (husband Mick Kuhns), were born in Madison. The family moved to Northfield, MN in 1957, when Bill accepted a faculty position in the Biology Department at Carleton College. Two more children, Margaret Muir Marshall (husband Bill Marshall) and William Ralph Muir (husband Bob Wright) were born in short succession after their arrival in Northfield.
Libby enjoyed being a homemaker, and she and her family maintained a large vegetable garden for many years, canning immense quantities of fruits and vegetables. She was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and in local churches. She and her family also enjoyed camping in central and northern MN.
Her husband, Bill, became totally blind by 1968. Her life then changed drastically, as she became what she referred to as “a seeing eye wife.” She worked with him around the clock to enable him to keep teaching at Carleton, helping him to do all that was required of a faculty member. She accepted this change with courage and grace, as did he.
Shortly before Bill became totally blind, they bought property on a lake in Itasca County, MN, and that property and the cabin they built and rebuilt there, using only hand tools, has been a primary gathering place for their family ever since. They went to the cabin year round, often snowshoeing in the last mile, often in the dark, Libby leading Bill. They and their children lived at that cabin during an entire fall and winter, while Bill was on sabbatical. Life there was hard—no electricity or running water, and wood for heat– but Libby loved the time there.
In 1971, they began teaching Botany at the Associated College of the Midwest’s wilderness field station on Basswood Lake, and they, with their children, spent that and several following summers there. She and Bill, with an able assistant (George “Skip” Wittler for most of the years), led students on canoe trips of between 5 and 10 days in the BWCAW and Quetico, usually three trips per summer. They paddled thousands of miles and crossed hundreds of portages, with her leading him across the rocky trails.
Bill died unexpectedly in 1985, and Libby, who had basically given her life to help him, was suddenly on her own. She rose to that occasion as well. She became active in various volunteer efforts, including leading Bible study at the men’s penitentiary in Faribault, MN and serving as a volunteer reader for the MN Radio Talking Book, a service for the visually impaired, for many years. She received a Rice County Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year award in 2003. She continued to spend time at their cabin and traveled often to visit her children.
She accepted with grace the changes that came with age—she sold her home of 50 years in Northfield and moved to Grand Rapids, MN, where her daughter, Peggy, and family live. Her new home in Grand Rapids wasn’t ready by the time she sold her Northfield home, so she lived for two months alone in the autumn at her cabin. She voluntarily gave up driving, and moved from her new Grand Rapids home to an assisted living facility there, again graciously recognizing her increasing limitations.
During recent years, Libby could barely hear, could no longer see to read, and could no longer walk. Despite these limitations, she never complained, and always told her children how good a life she had. She was cared for with great tenderness by the staff at Majestic Pines, the assisted living facility where she lived in Grand Rapids. Libby quietly modeled love of nature, family and God; courage; grace; kindness; generosity; and strength of character. Her children hope that they will follow her amazing example, and she will be missed greatly.
A private family memorial service will be held in summer 2018 at her beloved cabin. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to the Community Presbyterian Church of Grand Rapids MN, or to the Minnesota Land Trust, or to MN State Services for the Blind Radio Talking Book program.
